GDDR5

Graphics Double Data Rate (GDDR) is a type of Synchronous Graphics Random Access Memory (SGRAM) that was first revealed in July 2007 by Samsung. Initially designed for use in graphics cards and game consoles, it is also used in high-performance computing, high-speed industrial cameras or drones.

GDDR5 is based on DDR3 SDRAM and uses 8-bit wide prefetch buffers. Although SGRAM is single-ported, it can open two memory pages at once, simulating the dual-port nature of other VRAM technologies.

Another difference is that GDDR5 operates with two different clock types that align read and write access with minimum latency.

In January 2016, JEDEC standardized GDDR5x with a transfer rate of 10 to 14 Gbit/s.
